Nelson is a 1-year-old neutered male smooth Collie.  He was a stray in Oklahoma and had an injured paw.  The emergency clinic needed someone to take responsibility for both the dog and the bills and a "collie rescue" was the natural choice.

Nelson's paw has healed nicely and he is now ready to look for the humans that will be his forever family.  He loves everyone.... man, woman or child.  (Toddlers might get knocked over by his exuberance.)  We watched his behavior recently at our annual RMCSR picnic and he invited each dog to party with him by doing the traditional play bow, all the Collies and Shelties getting equal time.  An adolescent smooth Collie is a very lively dog that will spend most of every day running and dancing and then napping briefly and doing it all over again.  He will need people to understand his "smoothie" sense of humor, which seems to be inherent in the young smooth (short haired) Collies but not so much in the rough (long-haired) Collies.  It is important to remember that although the smooth Collie hair is shorter, the dogs still have a double coat and the undercoat will still need to be groomed out regularly, at least once a week.

Nelson looks pretty scrawny in his current photos at about 64#.  He will look less so when his chest fills out in the next six months and he puts on another 10-15 pounds.  But he will continue to look as athletic as he feels.  He is up to date on all vaccines, heartworm negative and has great blood chemistries and CBC.  He will come with a duplicated file with all of his medical reports and the high quality grain-free kibble he is used to eating as well as his toys and chewies.  We always recommend a limited ingredient grain free diet for Collies and Shelties.

Puppies need a lot of hands-on care and training to become all the dog they are capable of being.  Grooming, socialization with people and other canines, obedience classes and rides in the car and the love that flows from the hands of the family members and makes a silky coat.  Those are incredibly important so that the adult dog reflects every bit of "good stuff" that took place earlier.  We will look favorably on folks with at least one adult home a good chunk of the time.  (We do realize people have to work to pay for dogfood.)

Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Adoption Policies and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously.  Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
