A COMPLETED APPLICATION IS OUR FIRST STEP TOWARD ANY PLACEMENT.  YOU WILL FIND THE ONLINE APPLICATION ON OUR WEBSITE AT www.colliesheltierescue.org.  AN INQUIRY FROM PETFINDER OR ADOPT-A-PET IS NOT THE SAME THING.  WITHOUT YOUR DETAILED INFORMATION, WE HAVE NO BASIS FOR A CONVERSATION.

Luna is the smallest and the shyest of the 5 Collies that came to us from a Missouri breeder that had too many dogs.  She watches from a little distance, with distrust in her eyes.  Here it is, Day 6 with the Collies.  All of the other Kahoka Collies have let me into their circle of friendship.  They want to know exactly who I am and how I smell.  They watch me putter around in what I call "doggie central."  "Look!  That woman is doing more laundry again!"  LOL  "Look!  She got more lean treats.  I really like those smelly bits."  But Luna just watches with her eyes wide.  I can sit beside her and stroke her silky white fur.  I can even put my arms around her and give her a gentle hug.  But her response is just the same....no change in expression or slightest wag of her tail.  She is an enigma.

Luna is not looking for an adopter exactly.  Luna needs a rehabber.  These Collies missed out on early socialization because of large numbers of critters on a rural property.  As I am sure you know, the herding breeds need to be close to their people.  They crave affection and when there is no human contact, they don't develop that bond that is so evident in our beloved companion dogs.  It is so sad to see.

Luna's preliminary vet care is all completed.  Vaccines, bloodwork, microchip, etc.  She will be spayed at the first opportunity.  That is the easy stuff.  We have rehabbed undersocialized Collies and Shelties numerous times.  It is important not to be angry at how this happened but to bring only positive energy to the relationship.  We have to prove to Luna that good people exist in the world.  That is the task.

Please read about the adoption requirements on our website and don't ask us to ignore them.  We require a securely fenced yard for a good reason.  It is to keep dogs safe.  We may accept digital photos of your home and yard in place of a home visit.  And your Veterinarian must tell us what a great owner you are.

Luna needs a hero.  Could that be you?

More about Luna

Good with Dogs, Good with Women Only, Somewhat vocal, Requires a yard, Timid, Skittish, Affectionate, Gentle, Needs a companion animal

Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Adoption Policies and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously.  Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
